Enter the gracious, welcoming gates to Nederburg and you will find a breathtaking blend of the traditional and the contemporary, just like its wines.
Set against the imposing Drakenstein Mountains near Paarl, the winery commands magnificent views and lets you imagine how it was in the beginning when founder, Philippus Wolvaart, arrived in 1791. His fine manor house, built in 1800, overlooks generous lawns and gardens, filled with birdsong and fragrant flowers and shrubs.
Close by is the very modern tasting centre with cosy hubs where visitors can taste from a wide selection of award-winning wines and take in the mountainscape or gaze at the vineyards. The centre also offers wines paired with a range of tasty cheese. A delicious snack box with nuts, cheese, bread and a mushroom tart is another option.
Cellar tours are also on offer, and need to be pre-booked. Foreign language tour guides could be arranged by prior appointment.
A country-style restaurant called The Red Table is run from the historic manor house. Picnics are available and can be enjoyed in the generous gardens, under shady trees.
Just a few steps away is the Old Cellar Museum for a fascinating glimpse of the Nederburg story, from the early days of Nederburg’s founder Philippus Wolvaart to his successors, including winemaking legends like Johann Graue and Günter Brözel. It was they who developed Nederburg’s reputation as one of the most awarded names in South African wine, maintained today by cellar-master Andrea Freeborough and her team of highly-skilled winemakers.
Don’t leave Nederburg without a visit to the Qhubeka bicycle assembly facility, where bicycles are built for distribution to vulnerable South Africans via various Qhubeka-affiliated community programmes. Here you will get to meet master bicycle mechanics Beverley Roode and Janine Johnson of Bicycles & Beyond (BAB), the empowerment organisation that manages the facility on behalf of Qhubeka. They are supported in their work by four previously unemployed ladies from the local communities surrounding Nederburg.
